Terminology That You Might Hear When You Buy A Used Car
There is certain terminology which seems to be used in the world of used cars. You could find that you end up feeling a little bit confused if you don’t know what is meant by these words. Here is a glossary of the most commonly spoken terms in relation to used cars.
- There have been scams where some people have meddled with the odometer of a used car in order to make it appear as though there are less miles on the clock than there really is and this is referred to as ‘clocking’. Do not ever buy a used car if you think it looks as though the odometer has been meddled with or changed at all.
- Ex-fleet cars come from a business rather than from an individual. Most businesses will replace their fleet every couple of years so you may pick up a great deal on one of these cars. It is also usual that these ex-fleet cars are better taken care of than your average second hand vehicle although they do clock up a lot of miles.
- Full Service History this refers to the fact that the car has been serviced on time throughout its life. If a car has a full service history then you can usually assume that it is going to be in good condition.
- VIN stands for vehicle identification number. This number is a great way to check out whether or not a car has been stolen. Stolen cars will usually have their VIN number tampered with so if you notice this, just walk away.
- A ‘coupe’ is a type of car that only comes with two doors and in most cases there will only be two seats in the car as well.
- One of the most popular websites for buying and selling used cars is ‘Craigslist’. This website was first started in the US but it has now become popular in the UK too.
